We might think we are nurturing our garden, but of course it’s our garden that is really nurturing us

Small spaces can be fabulous. This courtyard has extended the house outside and given an outdoor room. A covered area gives privacy from the surrounding houses and creates a cosey cocooned feeling in the garden.

Some top tips below on design small space

Cover the boundaries with plants but also go internally into the garden to give a feeling of being enveloped and a sense of depth. A mistake people often make in small spaces is to only plant the fence line but do plant in the middle it actually increases a sense of depth and makes the space feel bigger. Also, if you surround yourself with planting as it takes you mentally to another place.

Put just a few architectural pieces in the planting, not only does it give winter structural and strong lines for the plants to bounce against but they are also the best way to light a garden by emitting light but giving ambience with it. These pots are the gorgeous and tactical @torc_pots. They will last you a lifetime, so worth the investment.

Does this space make you want to take a coffee out and curl up with a good book.

I was infilling a few plants today. I had a lot of office work looming and i felt i should be in the office not here. Then i get to the garden..... Its raining i feel the need to be elsewhere. Then i am hit with this......gardens bloom, the rain falls, bees buzz anyway. Sometimes we just need to stand still and appreciate the now.

Happy now people.

Take a moment and look and listen. There is so much in the here and now and happening. Looking back on this photo i should have taken a few moments to have seen more. How the rain brings out the rocks, how textures of plants work together, which insects prefer which plants. All i saw was weeds and I felt wet. Now i want to revisit this moment. Hope the client has many moments here. Gardens should evoke emotions. Nature in a safe place.

Revisiting a driveway we designed and built a few years ago. Height of the trees settle the building into the landscape. The formality of the planting gives a nod to the regency period of the house and makes an entrance. The trees and shapes frame the drive. Just wait until the hydrangeas come out and pop. We loved this project, and people often stop and look in.

Give your home an entrance and enhance your house.

Designing a wide, narrow garden is about creating journeys around the garden. Planting in the middle to create mini rooms changes the dimensions, making the garden feel wider. Each room can have a different vibe and various style seating to make the garden an exciting place to be. This garden has gravel areas with planting to give textural interest in the hardscaping and continue planting throughout the garden with areas of easier maintenance. It has a kitchen garden area with edible planting and a greenhouse. A bistro table and chairs here mean the client can go there with a coffee and plan their seeds and what they are growing next while being in that space. Make veg areas a place you want to be you will have more success at growing as you will want to spend time there. The planting here has a soft, natural feel. Architectural pieces from arches divide areas, and pots with water running overs create a relaxing sound. Every aspect of this garden has been carefully thought about to give the client a space that can live in so they want to be outside more than in. Make you garden a space you really want to spend time in. It will improve your well-being.

Found on a walk today near Hay on wye: the incredible network of the web of the non native webworm moth to protect the caterpillars. Amazing what you find in our hedgerows.

Our natural world is a wonderful thing.

Finally, the water is on. It is designed to create a lot of sound to drown out the noise of a nearby road. Running water is by far the best way to dampen down the sound of traffic. The water festure we repurposed an old concrete planter to create this fabulous flow of water. We love using salvaged or repurposed pieces for water features. We have used so many different pieces from the side turbines from a boat and even an old jet engine. I will post these pieces over the few days. Be creative with statement pieces in the garden rather than buying new.
