Bringing rural bliss to a town garden

Type: Town Garden Design
Area: Cheltenham
The property:
This Cheltenham property featured an extension built that would sweep around its edge to open the garden up into the house. It was, in essence, a garden room whose purpose it was to capture the views out from the property.

Combining fire, water, earth and air for a gorgeous urban retreat

The brief:
The clients had installed a huge picture window in their dining room that overlooked the garden. The garden therefore needed a special attraction within it as the main focal point.

This garden space was small and featured a beautiful acer tree that we felt needed to be kept. So design was influenced by the presence of the tree.

The brief was for the parents and teenage children to have a fun space with a firepit in which to relax as a family, as well as entertain.

They were also keen to involve aquatic plants and the sound of running water and this water feature became the focus from the house and the garden.

Life begins the day you start a garden.

- Chinese proverb
The design:
We designed and built a bespoke water feature in situ. Enveloped by aquatic plants, it was as much for the birds and other wildlife, as it was for people.

Two mature trees were added either side of the water to provide shade as well as a sense of antiquity; a long-lost secret garden, rediscovered.

Nearby, a shaded, corner seating area offered a contemplative spot to listen to the trickling water.

Over on the other side, we installed a stylish, modern fire pit area. Since garden furniture already featured elsewhere, we used large rocks here for seating. This avoided a furniture-heavy space and also created a beautiful juxtaposition of the natural and the contemporary.
