“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared within our Braai.”
Garden type: Outdoor Kitchen
Area: Cheltenham, Gloucestershire
Garden designer: Keltie and Clark
To create a relaxed and rustic area for the family to enjoy.
The garden design
Our client wanted to bring her South African heritage to the kitchen, and to use a Braai instead of a barbeque. South African Braais cook over charcoal or wood rather than a gas flame.
Passing down the tradition of cooking with a Braai and teaching the next generation the skill.
“…Intelligence is something we are born with; Braai is a skill that must be learned”. Edward De Bono
The clients wanted their outdoor kitchen to feel cosy and relaxed but also practical for cooking and entertaining. Somewhere for the whole family to spend time together.
We wanted to design a space that could be used whatever the weather. The covered kitchen and seating area keep in the warmth as British weather is not quite like Southern African climate. Since this garden was built the clients have been out enjoying the space at all times of day even with an evening of late spring snow!
